1% of the Planet
We recently came across an very interesting organization called 1% of the Planet. "Since 2002, 1% for the Planet has inspired members of the business community to contribute 1% of sales to environmental groups around the world. In return, this growing alliance of companies is given the opportunity not only to see their self-worth rise, but their net worth climb as well."
Why should an organization join 1% of the Planet?
"When we consider the enormity of the environmental crisis it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. Obviously, the solution is not as simple as changing an incandescent bulb to a CFL. But 1% for the Planet is enabling businesses to take a lead role in being environmental stewards and to set an example for the rest of the business community. These companies embrace the notion that the sustainability of the natural environment is fundamental to the sustainability of business.
So, altruism aside, why else should a business become a 1% FTP member? Let’s start with opportunities. Membership creates opportunities for companies to network, conduct business and simply associate themselves with over 1,200 companies that have made the same noble commitment. From a consumer standpoint, member companies re-enforce a positive perception of their brand, adding value that can result in greater customer loyalty and an increased customer base, especially among the growing number of people who recognize and appreciate the importance of environmental responsibility."
At Try Change we feel we can all make a difference. For us, we donate 10& of all our profits to Volunteers of America which serves the homeless in the DC,VA & MD areas. We also adopt a homeless family during the holiday season, donate clothes as well as hold an annual Charity yard sale for VOA.You can find our shirts at:Fashion Mechanics in the Springfield and Manassas Mall

Keen
How could you give back on any given weekend? How about being a volunteer coach for developmentally disabled children and young adults. You can do so at KEEN Greater DC!
As noted on their website "KEEN is a national, nonprofit volunteer-led organization that provides one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families and caregivers. KEEN's mission is to foster the self-esteem, confidence, skills and talents of its athletes through non-competitive activities, allowing young people facing even the most significant challenges to meet their individual goals"
"All of KEEN's programs are based on a single principle: pair a trained volunteer with an athlete and let them discover together how much they can do. Programs are all open and unstructured, allowing athletes facing significant challenges to have fun and be successful. KEEN Greater DC now operates a dozen programs throughout the national capital area"
Interested in volunteering? You can contact KEEN at:

Ashoka
With our global community, we develop models for collaboration and design infrastructure needed to advance the field of social entrepreneurship and the citizen sector.
Our Fellows inspire others to adopt and spread their innovations - demonstrating to all citizens that they too have the potential to be powerful changemakers
-->
Ashoka invests in people. We search the world for leading social entrepreneurs and at the launch stage, provide these entrepreneurs—Ashoka Fellows—a living stipend for an average of three years, allowing them to focus full-time on building their institutions and spreading their ideas. We also provide our Fellows with a global support network of their peers and partnerships with professional consultants. Once elected to the Ashoka Fellowship, Fellows benefit from this community for life.
Venture is the mechanism through which Ashoka finds and supports the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. Ashoka was founded on the Venture model 25 years ago, and Venture remains the heart of Ashoka—the work upon which all of our efforts depend. We believe that the growth of a global citizen sector begins with the work of individual social entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs drive the sector forward, responding to new challenges and changing needs. They are rooted in local communities but think and act globally. They are the ultimate role models and the pillars of Ashoka’s vision of Everyone a Changemaker™. "

After several weeks in a coma, Lori Beth awakened with a frontal lobe injury to her brain. She was unable to walk, speak, or eat. The accident ended years of ballet, horseback riding, cheerleading, and many other outstanding endeavors. However, it did not end her life The goals changed but the drive and support of her family did not. Ms. Barrett, who knew very little on the subject of traumatic brain injury, did not hesitate. She immersed herself in Lori's hands-on rehabilitation and recovery. She discovered throughout the process that there was a crucial missing link in the rehabilitation cycle. There was no place to support the transition between acute rehabilitation, community reentry, and independent living skills. From this idea grew what is now The Crumley House."
- Every 21 seconds someone receives a brain injury in the US
- Every 5 minutes one of these people will die
- Of those who do survive (70,000 to 90,000) will have a lifelong loss of function
- Traumatic Brain Injury is the leading killer and cause of disability in teenagers and young adults

Awakening
While exploring Little Italy one evening, a group of windows on the upper floor of a building caught my eye. I said to Vince, either some one as some really beautiful art in their living room or that’s an art gallery up there. It was down the street a ways and on the other side of the street but we eventually made our way around to that side. Upon passing the stairway leading up to that group of windows, we realized that it was indeed a gallery. We debated. Food or Art? Art won and we wandered up the stairs to be welcomed by some amazing, colorful, beautiful work by an artist named Grant Pecoff.
We did eventually end up getting some good food there in Little Italy but not until after we had spent some time with the art work and the artist. We met Grant and his wife Layne, who is also an artist though her art is through her writing and not with a brush. The concept of the art that is being shown is one of awakening and becoming aware of your surroundings, of becoming really alive and appreciating the world around you. The colors are amazing. You are brought into the painting like you are there but experiencing your surroundings with different eyes. I guess they are Grant’s eyes that you are experiencing it through, but for me, the art made me feel like they were my eyes just seeing things from a different perspective. There is a sense of positive forces working and a sense of hope.
We’d like to invite our readers to check out Grant and Layne Pecoff’s art on their website: http://www.pecoff.com/
Or if you are in the San Diego area you can visit their gallery at:
1825 India St
San Diego, CA 92101
Ph: 619-231-1991
Click here to see a list of other galleries where Grant Pecoff’s work is available. Click on the photos within this post to view some of Grant’s work online. Also, don’t forget to check out the books that are available (Written by Layne and illustrated by Grant).
Thanks for stopping by!

Metro Teen Aids
- Approximately one half of all new HIV infections in the United States occur among people under 25 years of age.
- Washington, DC has the highest rate of AIDS of any major metropolitan area in the country.
- Local STI rates for DC’s youth are almost twice the national average.
One local organization that is doing something about it is Metro TeenAIDS.
Their Mission Statement as listed on their website is:
Metro TeenAIDS is a community health organization dedicated to supporting young people in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Through education, support, and advocacy, MTA works to prevent the spread of HIV, promote responsible decision making, and improve the quality of life for young people infected with, or affected by, HIV/AIDS.
What do they do?
Metro TeenAIDS provides resources to help young people fight AIDS and support each other. MTA is the only organization in the Washington DC-metro area focusing all of its efforts on the unique prevention, education, and treatment needs of young people.
- Advancing the overall health of at-risk and HIV-infected adolescents is within our community’s power. Metro TeenAIDS advances community prevention efforts by:
Mobilizing young people in support of their peers battling stigma and indifference by raising community awareness about the threat HIV/AIDS poses to young people. - Providing HIV information and innovative prevention strategies to young people and the adults in contact with them, uniting with other organizations to ensure that teenagers receive adolescent-appropriate and easily accessible prevention, health care, and counseling services as well as safe recreational opportunities.
- Developing comprehensive programs which address the many co-factors of adolescent HIV infection — including low self-esteem, drug and alcohol abuse, dangerously unproductive free time, and exposure to peer groups which encourage unhealthy and risky behavior.
How can you help?
There are several ways you can support Metro TeenAIDS in the fight against HIV/AIDS among young people in Washington D.C. Please click on one of the following options.

Ceasefire
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
Well, it's been a very busy couple of weeks for us at Try Change. We expanded into 5 more stores bringing the total of stores that carry the Try Change line to over 30 stores!
Tonight we would like to introduce you to Ceasefire. We learned about Ceasefire from segment on the NBC Nightly News
"CeaseFire is the first initiative of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention. It works with community-based organizations to develop and implement strategies to reduce and prevent violence, particularly shootings and killings. CeaseFire relies on outreach workers, faith leaders, and other community leaders to intervene in conflicts, or potential conflicts, and promote alternatives to violence. CeaseFire also involves cooperation with police and it depends heavily on a strong public education campaign to instill in people the message that shootings and violence are not acceptable. Finally, it calls for the strengthening of communities so they have the capacity to exercise informal social control and respond to issues that affect them. "
You can learn more about Ceasefire by watching one of their videos:
