Save The Rainforest

Well the holiday season is almost behind us but before 2007 is gone we'd like to share another opportunity for our readers to give back. At rainforestalliance.org you can save a half an acre of rain forest in South and Central America for only $25.00.

As stated on thier website The Rain Forest Allaince Mission is to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. There is a wealth of information on this site so please stop by and look around and maybe even visit The Frog Blog or send an e-card to a friend.

The holidays may be coming to a close but with the new year dawning, there's never been a better time to make changes.

Happy New Year!

How often have we heard the dogs are "Man's best friend". Well recent studies make that statement more true today than ever. Case studies have shown that a by holding a or petting an animal can actually release tension and lower your blood pressure. This is where Therapy Dogs International, Inc comes in.

Therapy Dogs International, Inc. (TDI) is a volunteer group organized to provide qualified handlers and their Therapy Dogs for visitations to nursing homes, hospitals and any other place where Therapy Dogs are needed

How can you and your dog become part of TDI ?

If you would like more information, please contact TDI via email at tdi@gti.net, or if you would prefer, call us at (973) 252-9800

Keep Pushing

"Triumph often is nearest when defeat seems inescapable"-B.C Forbes

Are you starting a new business? Looking back at a past New Years Resolution that you did not keep? or simply struggling with an area of your life? There where times ( and some times even now) when I questioned my vision of Try Change -Inspirational T-Shirts for Change would actually come about. I wondered if people would be interested in a line of t-shirts that promoted something other than guns, skulls, violence and intolerance. Funny thing though just when I thought I was off track something great (not good) would happen to put me back on course.

I was recently sharing with a friend on how when we started Try Change it was hard finding people that believed that we could be successful. Now we have people that want to be part of Try Change. Our new website will be up soon and the shirts will actually be in stores. My message tonight for those who are out there fighting the good fight to bring about change is to Keep Pushing. We (the world ) need you!

Good Giving

I saw a little blurb about The Case Foundation on the news this afternoon and thought I would check it out. Their Guide to Giving is a great idea for the holidays. It really captures the spirit of the season. You can give and actually help someone else at the same time.

Here is an excerpt from their website:

Our mission is to achieve sustainable solutions to complex social
problems by investing in collaboration, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Jean and Steve Case founded the Case Foundation in 1997 to
reflect their family's heartfelt commitment to finding lasting solutions to complex social challenges. Today, the foundation is pursuing a number of initiatives, and is particularly focused on three strategies:

Encouraging collaboration;
Supporting successful leaders; and
Fostering entrepreneurship in the nonprofit sector.

With the hussle and bussle of the holiday season upon us it is very easy to lose your true holiday spirit. Why not take a moment to see if you can't make someone else wish come true while still finishing up some shopping?

Childs Play Charity

So often when I think of items that are donated to less privileged children I think of clothes and maybe some toys. I recently came across a pretty cool organization that donates DVD and Video Games to children who are in the hospital. childsplaycharity.org is the name of the organization.

Here's information on this group via their website:

Since 2003, over 100,000 gamers worldwide have banded together through Child’s Play, a community based charity grown and nurtured from the game culture and industry. Over two million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since our inception.
This year, we have continued expanding across the country and the globe. With over 45 partner hospitals and more arriving every month, you can be sure to find one from the map above that needs your help! You can choose to purchase requested items from their online retailer wish lists, or make a cash donation that helps out Child’s Play hospitals everywhere. Any items purchased through Amazon will be shipped directly to your hospital of choice, so please be sure to select their shipping address rather than your own.

It's so great fining organizations like this one who are going about the business of making a difference. i hope you this information useful and remember we do not have to wait for the holidays to give to others :-)

Thank you,

Vince

Right Here , Right Now

This week I had the opportunity to travel to Orlando Fla. to attend a conference pertaining to my job in the hospitality field. I asked Chrissie to come down with me a couple of days before the conference started to check out what Orlando has to offer. We decided to get up early one morning and take a drive to Coco Beach. The weather was great and there were only a couple of people on the beach due to the Red Tide so it seemed we had the whole place to ourselves. Walking along the beach I thought of how peaceful and relaxing everything was at the moment. I also thought of how I'm always working on the next thing whether it's the next task at work, the next workout at the gym or the next assignment needed to be completed for Try Change.

Taking that walk also reminded me that it's great for me to be focused on task and assignments that need to be finished but it's also just as important to enjoy where I'm at during any moment in time. I admit it's easy to say that when your walking along a beach in 85 degree weather in the middle of December but still I should find more time to relax and enjoy the little things in life as well. Here's to quiet times, no traffic, no pushy people at the mall and no deadlines.
I hope this holiday season gives you time to relax and enjoy the little things in life.

Homeless Children?

Unfortunately that often is response when people are told that yes we do have homeless children. Often people think of homeless individuals as older gray haired men or women but children also make up the homeless population. Tonight we bring yet again another way you can make a difference. At Project Night Night you can, with your friends, assemble items such as a blanket , books and stuff animals then contact Project Night Night to order a tote bag $3.00 that you can place the items in.Then just select a shelter that you want to deliver the Project Night Night Tote Bags to.

Project Night Night has won several charity awards and has appeared in numerous publications including San Francisco Business Times and Glamour Magazine.

Together we can make a difference!

Something Different

Another Holiday season is once again upon us and judging by some of the TV commercials I'm in big trouble if I don't buy my fiance a Lexus or a diamond from Jarred. It seems the ante goes up each year and I'd swear there was a time when getting what you really needed for the holiday's was enough. This year Chrissie and I decided to adopt a family from the Hilda Barg Homeless Shelter here in Woodbridge VA. The shelter is part of Volunteers of America Chesapeake network of services. As you may know Try Change is a official partner of Volunteers of America Chesapeake so we look for ways to assist this worthy organization. Our decision was based upon the fact that we are far more fortunate that many people in this world and it's our obligation to give back whenever we can.

If you are like us your closet, storage space or garage is full of items you have gathered over the years. Do we really need to go out and buy another new cell phone that will be replaced by the new and improved version in 3 months?
Why not take some of the money and help give someone a holiday to remember?

Happy Holidays!

Mentor Someone

Looking for a way to help change someone's life? Here's an award mentoring program that could help:

icouldbe.org is an award-winning non-profit organization that mentors teenagers to successfully transition from high school to college and/or their chosen career path. As a premiere e-mentoring program, icouldbe.org provides a secure online community where adults representing hundreds of careers and students find each other.

Too many American high school students:

Can't Explore. With caseloads as high as 1,000 students per counselor, guidance counselors are too overburdened to effectively advise students on their futures. High school students receive less than 3 hours of career counseling over 4 years.

Don't Connect. There are over 16,000,000 American youths that need mentors and only 4,000,000 mentors.

Never Grasp. Students know very little about various professions and unwittingly choose the wrong career path.

Another inspirational story and resource brought to you by Try Change. Please join our community and help spread the Try Change message as we launch our new line of Try Change Inspirational t-shirts for change.

Another Step

Tonight we took another step closer to realizing our dream of a line of Try Change Apparel. We met with a well established retail sales representative with many contacts in the retail field... This is the first time we showed our new line to anyone outside the immediate Try Change team. After viewing the designs the representative, he stated that he thought the designs were fresh and offered more than the skulls that seem to be on every shirt you see these days. He agreed to meet us again once we have the final samples completed . These samples are made to assist sales team members in conducting presentations to retail stores. If he is as impressed by the samples as he was with the designs he will put together a sales team to make sales calls to some of the major players in the retail field. One of (if not the number one) retailer we want to target is one of his old accounts so we should be able to get our line in front of that chain's buyer.

A couple of items still need to fall in place ( finish production on the samples and upgrade our website) however tonight we came away with several goals accomplished! Soon we will be able to show you some of the new Try Change shirts and hopefully the names of retail stores they can be found in :-)

Thank you!

When we started Try Change we set several goals to attain by August 2008. One such gaol was to have two hundred members friends at our Try Change blog. We are pleased to say we have exceeded that goal (207 members) eight months ahead of schedule! We want to thank everyone who takes the time out of their busy day to visit our blog and website. I have linked My Story for individuals who may not know the origin of Try Change inspirational t-shirts for change. We received such a positive response to our cause that we decided to take our t-shirt idea and create our own Try Change brand. Over the last several weeks we have contracted for Rocket Communications to upgrade our website, met with several designers to redesign our logo and t-shirts and had a a meeting with The van Aartrijk Group to formulate a Public Relations plan.

This along with some activities with Volunteers of America Chesapeake has really energized us to start the Try Change brand. We say thank you to everyone in our blog community who visited our site and offered words of encouragement but we are not finished. I ask that you continue to visit our blog, share our blog with your fellow bloggers and communities and wish us luck as we launch the Try Change Brand in February of 2008. Remember Try Change promotes peach, hope, faith, diversity and positive change with a portion of all profits donated to Volunteers of America Chesapeake.

Any Soldier

I came across a great website where you can donate items to our combat soldiers. You simply go to anysoldier.com select "where to send" and a list of soldiers appears for you to select from with their individual and group needs. The program was founded in in 2003 by Sergeant Brian Horn , who was stationed in Kirkuk at the time. Sgt. Horn agreed to hand out any packages that were delivered to him addressed "Any Soldier". As with most great ideas any soldier took off! Today Any soldier has expanded to all branches of the military . Past donated items include sock, shoes, t-shirts, deodorant and hats, items that many take for granted. Why not help those who are in need. Check out http://www.anysoldier.com/ today.

Choices

While at home this past weekend I had the chance to spend some time with my older brother . He shared with me a story of a photograph he lost in a fire some years back. In the picture was him and five of his friends. Unfortunately (fortunately for my brother) the only person still alive today is my brother. What make this even more sad is that my brother is only 50 years old. We began talking about the choices we make in life...do we decide to further our education so we can afford a better way of life? a life that permits us to go to the doctor for annual checkups? Do we associate ourselves with people that are striving to make the world a better place or do we hang out with shady characters that end up in trouble with the law? Do we try to eat right and exercises so we can live a healthier and hopefully longer life or do we hit the fast food joint and say next year I'll get in shape? I believe these little choices that we make in life adds up to either make our lives happy and healthy or just a struggle to survive.

There is an old saying (forgive me if I don't know it exactly)

"In the long journey of life it's not the mountains that wear you down but the pebble in the shoe"

It's my goal not to let the little pebbles (choices) wear me down but to make the right choices to live a happy and healthy life.
Join us at Try Change as we strive to share inspirational stories with others and promote positive change in our communities through volunteering, the promotion of inspirational t-shirts and other Volunteers of America activities.

Tagged!

In the past we haven't really done meme's but in an effort to tell more about ourselves we've decided to go ahead and try this lasted one from Mary Marete.

So this is a "Three Things I Can't Live Without" meme. It is meant to be more personal things, not the essentials for survival things like air, water, and food.

1. Serenity...I must have peace and order in my life. With life being so busy it's very important for both of us to be able to find that place in ourselves.

2. Eachother

3. Friends and family

I hope she doesn't get annoyed with us but we're going to tag Chrissie's friend Cindy at Sweet Bead Studio.

Thanks for stopping by!

Playing It Safe?

I recently read a fantastic quote that was posted on one of the blog communities I belong to:

"The riskiest thing to do is to play it safe"

It made me think about our decision at Try Change to expand our line of inspirational shirts from Cafe Press to actually sell them directly to retailers. About a month ago we made the decision, met with a local designer and put together our marketing plan.. Over the next several weeks we will revamp our website, make final changes to the new designs and set up meetings with local and national stores. We could have played it safe, kept our shirts on Cafe Press and hoped for the best but we decided to take the risk in hopes of a great reward not only for us but to have the opportunity to share our message of peace, hope, faith, diversity and positive change with as many people as possible. Also as stated before a portion of all profits are donated back to Volunteers of America Chesapeake.

In the coming weeks we will reintroduce you to the story behind Try Change and our partnership with Volunteers of America as well as an opportunity to win some free Try Change shirts. In the meantime we ask you to help us spread the Try Change message by sharing our blog with your members. The logo above is part of the whole re-design and we'd really love to hear what you think...please send us an email or leave us a comment here on the blog!

We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and hope you have a safe holiday with lots of turkey!

Food from the Hood

Food from the Hood is a program started back in 1992 by a group of students from Crenshaw High School. There goal was to covert a garden overrun with brush into a garden to supply food for the less fortunate people in there community. Here's a timeline on how a band of people can take a weed infested garden and turn it into $140,00 in scholarship money.

On December 18, 1992, Food From the 'Hood harvested its first crop and donated 100 percent of its produce to Helpers for the Home less and the Hungry, a local area food bank. "

In July 1993, Food From the 'Hood attended its first public Farmers' Market in Santa Monica, where the company sold $150 worth of produce in just 30 minutes.
In September 1993, when school was back in session, the student-managers researched the food industry and conducted a survey. The student managers came to an astounding conclusion, that salad dressing was one of the best selling food products. Food From the 'Hood contacted Rebuild Los Angeles for their first grant in hopes of turning the vegetable gardens into a business.
Rebuild Los Angeles, introduced Food From the 'Hood to Sweet Adelaide, a leading salad dressing co-packer and manufacturer. Working with food technologist from Sweet Adelaide, Food From the 'Hood converted its homemade salad dressing into a reproducible commercial product. After six tests and reformulation, Food From the 'Hoods "Straight Out' the Garden" Creamy Italian Dressing was born.

Working with Marketing Specialists(a major food broker), the student-managers met with leading grocery store chains to introduce their product. Within two months, they had achieved 100% distribution in all major grocery stores.
Rebuild Los Angeles, presented the Food From the 'Hood with a check for $50,000 to be used to make the salad dressing dream a reality. Within six weeks, Food From the 'Hood created its corporate office and completed its first "batch" of dressing.

More than Business
The program's most unique innovation is that "student-managers" participate in running every aspect of the business. The "student-managers" design, develop, and create products; plant, maintain and harvest their own garden; make marketing decisions, develop business plans, and run the daily operations. Each student "banks" his or her work hours, and receives payment in the form of a direct scholarship paid to their post- secondary school, college or university. The program also provides academic tutoring, SAT and college entrance exams preparation, mentoring, and life skills training.

To date, Food From the 'Hood has awarded over $140,000 in college scholarships to the student-managers. 77 program graduates have attended two-year or four-year colleges or technical schools. Student Managers have been accepted to colleges and universities throughout the nation including Cal State L.A, University of the Pacific, Pitzer College, Concordia University, Babson College, Howard University, San Diego State, Tuskegee Institute, Morehouse, Stanford, University of California at Berkeley, Cal Poly Pomona, Clark-Atlanta, University of North California, USC, Chapman University, and much more. 20 program graduates receives their college degree in 2000, with 5 of them entering postgraduate programs.

Yes, people can still make a difference!

An Amazing Day!

Today I participated in the 20th Anniversary Homeless Walkathon in Washington DC and I have to say it was amazing. I arrived just in time to register, get my shirt and get to the starting line. There were thousands of people who showed up for the walk. Companies ranging from Fannie Mae to Volunteers of America. Congresswomen Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Fenty were in attendance as well. I walked with my fellow Volunteers of America Chesapeake members and had a great conversation with Susan Bently the Volunteer Services Coordinator for the Residential Program Center. I will admit that I felt very proud when someone came up and said "Your the Try Change Guy".

I was able to get to shake Mayor Fenty's hand and thank him for coming out for the walk and then introduce myself to the Outreach and Services Specialist for the 2nd Ward. I told him a little about Try Change and how we are official partners with Volunteers of America. He asked me to email him some information and perhaps there is a way the we can work with the mayor's office in some capacity.

The musical entertainment was fantastic. BB Wayans, Michael McDonald and Darius Ruckus ( Hootie of Hootie and the Blowfish) I have to tell you that it was absolutely incredible when they had Michael McDonald on Piano, with BB Wayans and Darius Ruckers singing Amazing Grace. On top of that BB Wayans and another singer sang Oh Happy Day. I witnessed all this less than 75ft from the stage.

If you have never been to the Homeless Walkathon I'm here to tell you get yourself to one. If you can't get to DC check the VOA's website for one near your home state.

What An Amazing Day!

Networking 101

One of the great things about being the President of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is being introduced to new area businesses. Tonight I met Michael Stewart of Stewarts Inspirational Cards. Michael's inspiration for starting Stewarts Inspirational Cards is his mother. He would call his mother and start the conversation with “Wilhemina, Wilhemina, Wilhemina!” He would ask a question every time he talked to her ....“Ain’t God Good, You Know What, or Mother are you still Fine?” She would respond to the question, “Ain’t God Good?”, by saying, “All the Time”. Michael began to take every question he asked his mother and put it on paper. He decided take those conversations and share them with everyone. There are over 300 cards to select from, so there's something for everyone!

Visit Stewarts Inspirational Cards at

Stewart,

Thanks for sharing your story with Try Change!

Student Empowerment

I recently came across a very interesting organization called Campus Progress. As stated on their website:

"Campus Progress is part of the Center for American Progress, works to help young people -- advocates, activists, journalists, artists, and others -- to make their voices heard on issues that matter. Through an online magazine and student publications, public events, and grassroots issue campaigns, Campus Progress acts to empower new progressive leaders nationwide as they develop fresh ideas and perspectives and seek to communicate in new ways.
Campus Progress is working to see that the next generation of progressive leaders is better trained, better informed, more diverse, and more united than any generation before. We’re helping to build a strong progressive movement by connecting young people across the divides of region, background, and issue interests, and working to keep them connected over time. "

"Campus Progress primarily organizes at colleges and universities—where many young people are concentrated and easier to reach—but we intend our work to
be accessible and useful to everyone. Even if you’re not a college student, or a young person at all, or even if you don’t share our views, we hope you’ll stick around this website. There’s plenty of news, debate, and controversy, great writing, and eye-opening multimedia. Look around, create your own blog, pitch us a story, post your comments"

This organization seems to be getting alot of attention. Check it out!

Nothing But Nets!

Looking for an inexpensive way to make a BIG difference?

Let me introduce you to Nothing But Nets as explained on their website:

Malaria is a disease caused by the blood parasite Plasmodium, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Infected humans experience flu-like symptoms that can result in coma and death. Malaria infects more than 500 million people a year and kills more than a million— one person dies about every 30 seconds. The disease is particularly devastating in Africa, where it is a leading killer of children. In addition to being home to the deadliest strain of malaria and the mosquito best equipped to transmit the disease, many areas in Africa lack the proper infrastructure and resources to fight back.

How can you help?

For just $10, we can purchase a bed net, deliver it to a family, and explain its use. Bed nets work by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur. A family of four can sleep under an insecticide-treated bed net, safe from malaria, for up to four years. The benefits of bed nets extend even further than the family. When enough nets are used, the insecticide used to deter mosquitoes makes entire communities safer—including even those individuals who do not have nets.

Please join Try Change in spreading the word about this inexpensive way to fight back the dreaded disease of Malaria. Visit nothingbutnets.net, make a $10.00 contribution and save a life!

Pass It On

Today I once again participated in the weekly give away at the homeless shelter. Each week 30 to 50 people and families come to the shelter to pick up food, blankets and other items that were donated by the community. I donate items as well as help with the organizing of the giveaway. Today I decided to donate (along with some other items) a framed motivational slogan that belonged to a good friend of mine who passed away some years ago. At first I was hesitant to give it away, Jimmy was a great friend and the slogan means a lot to me however I thought maybe someone else could benefit from it as well. The slogan reads:

"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."

So I placed the item into the bin and went about my business at the giveaway. Several minutes later as I noticed a man sorting through the bin the frame was in. I could not believe it but he picked up the frame, read it and put it in his box he was collecting items in. I wanted to go over and tell him I donated the item and what it meant to me however I thought let him have his own story to tell one day . Something in the slogan made him pick it up, maybe it will help him further achieve his own goals. Maybe the slogan will be a part of his story one day.

Maybe there's a story, slogan or item that helped motivate you. Why not share it with others? If you have story, please share it with us at Try Change!

Together we can make a difference.

Vince
We miss you Jimmy!

Common Sense Prevails

At the Try Change blog we highlight individuals or organizations that are taking steps to make positive changes in the world. These stories inspire ourselves and others so we feel they should be recognized for their efforts. Tonight's entry is a little different but no less inspiring. Tonight we recognize the family of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder. Lance Cpl. Snyder was killed in Iraq and during his funeral the Fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church decided to picket the funeral service.

The church has picketed funerals before with signs that reads: "God hates fags" and "Thank God for dead soldiers". They believe God is punishing America for its immoral ways. I'm sure there are many people with different views on the war in Iraq, however picketing a funeral of a serviceman, or for that matter anyone, is not the decent thing to do. If you want to protest there are plenty of government organizations and agencies to visit. A funeral is private not a public forum.

We salute the family of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder for standing up to Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps and his two daughters. They took them to court and were awarded $11 million. They received $2.9 Million in compensatory damages, $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for emotional distress.

No amount of money can bring back Cpl. Matthew but maybe this judgment will make people think before using someones funeral as a platform to make their case. We are for freedom of speech but we are also for common sense as well.

Lets not let the tail wag the dog.

More Progress

Hello everyone,

Tonight I am please to announce that Try Change has entered into an agreement with Italian American Graphic Designer and Web Developer David B Anthony to design our new Try Change line of clothing. When we started Try Change we thought of just selling the t-shirts on line via Cafe Press but the response to our goal of promoting Hope, Peace, Faith, Diversity and Positive Change was so great that we decide to take a leap of faith to market them directly to local retailers. It's seems as though each week someone or some organization steps up and offers their help in assisting us reach this goal. We will still have our shirts available on Cafe Press as well but with selling directly to retailers we will be able to donate a higher portion of the profits to Volunteers of America Chesapeake.

David Anthony has worked with:

G-Unit

Echo Unlimited

Liberte Clothing

DVS Shoe co

Asylum WSS

just to name a few...

We feel very fortunate to work with David on our vision of offering a sociably conscious line of clothing. I want to thank everyone who takes the time out of their busy day to visit our blog and website. I look forward to sharing our new designs with you in the near future!

Thanksgiving?

I was recently in a large department store and to my amazement they had already started playing holiday music. Maybe I'm getting a little old but I could have sworn there was a time that we dressed up in costumes for Halloween and gave thanks on Thanksgiving before we jumped into the holiday season. It seems every year the stores start the shopping season earlier and earlier, before you know it we'll be shopping for gifts in August.

Don't get me wrong I look forward to the holiday season but I wonder if we miss something by rushing right into. Going out on Halloween was a BIG thing when I was a kid and Thanksgiving was a time for friends and family to gather and say thanks for all that we have not just a time to gather to watch the game. With all this rushing around, do we really take the time to reflex on what each holiday means to us? Do we really take the time to cherish the moments we get to spend with our friends and family? So whatever holidays you choose to celebrate, make sure you make the best out of them...

This season I plan on taking the time to enjoy each holiday and not get caught up in too much of the latest and greatest sale at the local department store. To all the stores out there - I love the music but maybe we can start playing it in December (or at least late November) :-)

A New Direction

I recently came across a great article written by Stanley Crouch of the New York Daily News. This article focused on the now growing shift in the public tolerance towards unruly behaviour of public figures including politicians, sports figures, celebrities and business men and women. The article examines the recent arrest of the rapper "T.I." on weapons charges. T.I. allegedly attempted to purchase machine guns and silencers. If proven guilty he could face 60 years in jail. Mr. Crouch goes on to say, and I agree with him, that America has grown weary of this ridiculous behavior by our public figures. Especially in the world of Hip Hop. Rapper KRS-1 has just launched a Stop the Violence campaign . This campaign will be similar to the campaign that began in late 80'2 early 90's when crack cocaine use was at it highest.

Busta Rhymes, one of the country's most well known rappers, recently told allhiphop.com
" In a lot of ways, as much as we don't want to take responsibility, you know, a lot of the things we say does influence to a degree. It may not be directly, but even indirectly we play a role in what the people might think they want to do tomorrow, based upon what they hear us say today or what they see us live today"

We at Try Change welcomes this change in view points we only hope that this message grows stronger and stronger. This is what Try Change is all about: positive change. Where do we go from here if we allow ourselves to call each other all types of names, let our children wear all types of suggestive garments, sell drugs to each other and even kill each other.

A Change Must Occur.

Westwood

Allow me the opportunity to brag a little bit about my hometown of Westwood NJ. Located In Bergen County just 10 minutes from NY's George Washington Bridge.

I can give you populations figures, stats, level incomes and an assortment of numbers to formulate where Westwood sits in each of these categories however I'll think I 'll just share my observations during my extended weekend visit.

I woke up Monday morning in the same house that our family has owned for the last 60 years. I rode my bicycle up town. On the way to town I passed several parents that were walking their kids to Berkeley Elementary School. I went to pick up some bagels from the bagel shop that's been in town for at lease 25 years. After breakfast I walked down the street for a 10 minute walk that turned into 3 hours because I stopped and talked with my old school friend, his grandmother, then went to both my aunts houses and finally stopped by our park. All this is located on a street less than a 1/2 mile long. After my conversations, I visited the local pizza shop where I did not have to give my order since he new what I wanted even though I've been living in VA for the last 10 years.

The next day I rode my bicycle for 2 1/2 hours and did not hit one major highway or road way. I walked through my backyard to the football field to watch a Pee Wee Football game and later rode my bike up town to stop at the local soda shop that's been in existence since the 1930's..

When I was a kid I always use to talk about how no one in Westwood wanted things to change and now I know why.

It's a great place to live.

If the World Were a Village

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oumVHSj6AE8

This video is amazing! Just think about it...it breaks it down to 100 people so its easier to put it in perspective. The actual population of the world is about 6.6 Billion (6,602,224,175 as of Sept. 2007). So how many people are out there that don't have a roof over their heads, don't have enough food, can't read and have no way of improving their situation? And the better question...what can we do to help? What can we do to make a change in the environment and living conditions of our own world?

Mood Follows Action

Mood Follow Action- I have a good friend of mine who said that to me once when I was complaining about something that I have since forgotten. I have not however forgotten that line:

Mood Follows Action. People that I know either through work , the gym or any one of the organizations I belong to typically make comments about how I seem to always be in a good mood. I attribute that to several reasons:

  • I try to help others without asking anything in return

  • Realize that someone else is living through a very difficult time right at this very moment

  • I surround myself with positive pro active people

For me those things and some others are my recipe for happiness. If I'm in a stressful situation I look back at what was going on before the situation came about. Am I really mad about getting the speeding ticket? Or am I upset at myself because instead of getting to bed early I decided to watch a late night talk show, get up late then rush off to work , speeding by a police officer who is only doing what he does so he can help put food on his or her table?

Of coarse there are times when circumstances are placed upon us and on those times it may be difficult to chant the Mood Follows Action mantra :-) For me however, keeping a cool head is easier when I apply and think about the principles I mentioned before. Some other habits that help me are:

  • I don't drink

  • I don't smoke

  • I exercise at least four times a week

  • And I don't tell someone else not to drink , smoke or to exercise (maybe sometimes I do suggest it though :-) )

Now if I can just leave the barbecue ribs, hamburgers, pepperoni pizza and tacos alone :-)

Be The Miracle

Awhile back I had the pleasure in helping a young lady pay for a portion of her first semester's tuition to go to a community college here in our area. Today I was fortunate enough to meet this particular student. She expressed her gratitude and said she that at the time she did not know how she was going to be able to pay for that first semester. It made me think of how we hear or we see people going through a difficult time. We hear or see them say they need a miracle... Well, if we have the resources to help them, why not be the miracle.

One evening while visiting the Hilda Barg Shelter I witnessed a man who found a complete men's suit in the clothes bin. He was so happy because it actually fit him and he needed a suit to go an interview with the next day. Simple items that we take for granted or throw away can actually be the lifeline someone else needs.

So the next time you hear that someone needs a miracle or just plain assistance, why not try to pull some resources to make it happen?

Thank you for making a difference!

Lifewraps

Each week Trychange.org showcases an inspirational story or worthy cause of the week. Some of these are local stories some are from the U.K , Asia , Africa and beyond. Today we will highlight Dr. Suellen Miller work with Life Wraps.

As stated on their website:

"Each year 585,000 women die due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, 99% of these are in developing countries. Maternal mortality is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age in Asia and Latin America, and is the second leading cause of death for women in Africa. The leading cause of maternal mortality is obstetrical hemorrhage. A woman can bleed to death in two hours or less, and in rural areas, where hospitals may be four to eight hours away, this leaves little hope for women suffering from post-partum hemorrhage."

"The Life Wrap is a simple, neoprene and Velcro device, used to treat shock, resuscitate, stabilize and prevent further bleeding in women with obstetric hemorrhage. Each $250.00 Life wrap suite can save up to 50 lives".

To learn more about LifeWraps go to their website http://www.lifewraps.org/ or contact

Driving for Donations

Here's a story that can uplift us all. Driving for Donations is a program started by Pat an 11 year old boy who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March of 2006. After seeing a good friend of his pass away from the disease Pat decided he had to do something to make a difference. And what a difference he's made! Pat's goal was to add 2007 new donors to the National Marrow Registry in 2007. Well Pat exceeded his goal by adding 5,092 new donors to the list!

As he states on his website:

"Recently, someone I knew died from Leukemia after they were unable to find a matching bone marrow donor. I found out that there is a critical need for people to be added to the National Marrow Registry, especially minorities! I don't want anyone else to die because they can't find a match! That day I decided to do something to help save lives and the idea of ONE CHILD'S DREAM /DRIVING FOR DONORS was born. On April 17, 2007, I began DRIVING FOR DONORS! My family and I drove across the country in a special "Donormobile" . We hosted marrow donor drives in 32 cities and added potential donors to the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. We added over 5000 donors in 3 months! "

Pat's been featured on:

  • NBC's Today Show

  • Access Hollywood

  • KDVR-TV in Denver

  • WKYC's in Cleveland

Just to name a few. Click here to see the interviews.

He still needs your help, so to spread the word we are making Pat and his story our Featured Inspirational Story of the Week.

Thanks Pat for showing us that we all can make a difference!
