I recently came across a fantastic website called idealist.org. At Idealist.org they match up people who have a causes with jobs, volunteers and resources to make their cause a reality. You can also receive emails on events in your area that you find interesting by filling out a quick survey on their site. Currently there are over 185,000 people signed up on Idealist and it's my guess many more will follow. As they state on their website:

Idealist is an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives."
